Fan lore has always been an important part of Mortal Kombat history. Ever since their days at
Midway in Chicago, the creative team has given us little hidden gems that hint at new playable
characters, with new moves and Fatalities. Even characters who have started off as glitches have
eventually made their way into the roster in games that followed! Its these little secrets that keep
us coming back to the game. Because new characters mean new moves, and new ways to rip the
competition to shreds!
Such secret characters were a result of developers having their say. Now that we can interact
with fans all over the world, in a way, were all developers! We think its time to fund and
introduce a character patently built by the fans to include in the new MK roster. We think that
character is Khrome, and wed like you to help us bring this great new fighter into the next game.
Following in the tradition of new character origins, Khrome was inspired by a glitch on the
part of a maker of MK collectibles. In this toy, the gray areas of Smokes suit were cast lighter
and shinier. This got fans thinking about the powers of liquid metal that a fighter could harness,
and the inspiration for a new take on the old palette-swapped ninja fighter started by Scorpion
and Sub-Zero was born.
So why did we decide Khrome should be based in liquid metal? Liquid metal lends itself to
shapeshifting and maneuverability. This could mean special moves where he can extend his
reach, and dodge projectiles. Liquid metal is also strong and sharp. Just like Jax has a bionic
arm, weve outfitted Khrome with an arm thats functionally a scythe. Fans of blade-wielding
kombatants like Kabal, Baraka, and Kitana will love Khromes moves and dynamic abilities. We
believe these abilities will bring a new dynamic to the standard fighting elements of Mortal
Kombat, and please old fans at the same time.
Why We Need Your Help
Fans have expounded upon the classic MK ninja design of the original toy had the classic MK
ninja design, so the final product will be more than just another palette swap. More contributors
mean more eyes on the product, and more people testing out ideas in real time. Honing Khrome
into a legendary MK warrior will be a community effort and will set an amazing precedent for
fan contributions to fighting games. Khrome is the first step in bringing the MK fan democracy
brought to life!
Fundraising campaigns for fighting game development have found great success in stretch goals.
Skullgirls raised over five times their campaign goal and were able to develop two new
downloadable characters. That means that once we build Khrome, we could dive deeper into the
fan lore and bring other characters to life, informing the MK development team with ideas they
might not have come up with at the drawing board. Let this campaign represent all of MK fan
involvement as a whole. A contribution today might mean your favorite glitch gets brought to
life as a playable character!
Make a move to have your voice heard in designing Mortal Kombats next hit character. Harness
the power of the people to bring us all a character thats totally metal liquid metal. Thank you
for your contributions and mentions on social media they are much appreciated! The bigger the
fan base we get on board with Khrome, the easier it will be to make him a functional part of the

Mortal Kombat has stood as a legend among fighting games for over 20 years. In that time, fans
have contributed to a legendary roster of fighters. The world is ready now with crowdfunding
and crowdsourcing technology to put the community of Mortal Kombat fans into the drivers
seat and direct the future of fighting legends. The Mortal Kombat of tomorrow may surpass
anything thats ever before been done with the series of the genre, and we are the ones to make
that come true.
So Pop Culture Shock Collectibles is a maker of Mortal Kombat collectible figurines. And they
made a mistake. They made Smoke a little lighter than usual they made the accents of his suit a
little lighter and shiny looking. They posted a picture of it, and said that they would offer it to the
creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon. They called it Khrome, and once they gave him a name,
the wheels started turning.
The name of Khrome made me think of a character with the powers of liquid metal and
mirrors. A lot of MK characters have a sort of elemental vibe so, Khrome is where steel meets
water. I had artists expand on the characters design. He was in just the standard ninja suit I
expanded on that but gave him a bladed arm and a mask of chrome to cover his mouth. Aside
from the blade attacks from his arm, he could have lots of other special moves based on
shapeshifting and deflection.
I see this as the extension of in-game glitches getting made into characters. Ermac started off as a
glitch. Thats why I like Khrome. He started off as a mistake on the part of the toy company, and
now, if the fans get behind me, we can add him to the roster. We are carrying on the tradition of
finding gold in the glitches, and establishing a firmer fan-based culture of Mortal Kombat around
the world. This can be the start of a long line of user-generated character development.
Fighting games have actually had a lot of success with crowdfunding. Skullgirls raised over five
times their campaign goal and were able to develop two new downloadable characters. It takes
about a hundred and fifty thousand dollars to develop a character, but I see the potential for way
more through the use of stretch goals. The more we raise, the more we can develop what we
submit. And if the studio passes on Khrome as a playable character, we would propose him as a
I like the possibility that fans can get behind a game like Mortal Kombat and be a part of the
development process. With a lot of us working together, we can show them ideas they might
have never thought of. We can develop the ideas among ourselves, so we can tweak them to be
better and better.
Ultimately I put together this campaign so the fans can have their voices heard. If we can bring
Khrome to life, then Netherrealm Studios will see how dedicated their fans are, and give us more
opportunities to submit who we want to see. Thanks for supporting our campaign, and be sure to
tell your fighting game fan friends on social media. We are dedicated to making this game the
best it can possibly be, and hopefully inspire a new generation of development principles. We
can only do this together though. Lets make that world a reality.
