Cognitive development in children begins from the moment a child has been born. This
development includes language, numeracy, pre-reading and vocabulary. Before an infant can
speak, the brain acquires tremendous information concerning a language during the first year.
Therefore, before babies can speak or even understand the first words, they are aware of the
particular sounds used in their language. In addition, they know the combination of sounds used
to make word and also the rhythm and the tempo of various words and phrases. In the given
scenario, a child of 2 years has not yet started speaking and hence experiencing a delay in her
cognitive development. Developmental delays take place when a child does not reach the
developmental milestone as other children. This may occur in five main categories that include
fine motor, gross motor, social, cognitive and language. It is possible for a child to delay in more
than one area (Farenga, 2005).
Language development varies in different children since there are those with normal
development and others who are late bloomers. It is, therefore, advisable for the parent to check
the hearing of the child before seeking other assistance since a child might be a late bloomer. In
the age of 2 years, a child with normal language development should be able to say 3-word
sentence and has his or her vocabulary growing. In addition, she should be able to make the
sounds of the familiar animals. The girl in the given case is not able to make such advances in
communication. This may be caused by hearing loss which can easily be overlooked and
identified, developmental speech and disorder caused by different working of the brain. This
makes the child not to understand what other people are saying. In addition, intellectual
disability, prematurity, autism and auditory processing disorder are other factors that may
contribute to delayed language development for the little girl (Farenga, 2005). It is very
important for early identification of the language/speech problems so that the daughter can start

her treatment early enough. Therefore, my reactions would be first for the parent to check the
hearing of the child, and if it is okay, I will advise the parent to take her for treatment. The
treatment should always be individualized and developmentally appropriate. In addition, I would
recommend a treatment team consisting of a doctor, an audiologist, a speech-language
pathologist, a social worker and an occupational therapist. With the help of these specialists, the
language development of the child should be set revived (Fenichel, 2009).

Introduction
Child development is the ability of the child to do more complex things as they grow up.
Growth in this aspect is the developing of the child in size and weight. Failure of the child
achieving this development sparks concern to a parent. A child must be able to eat on its own,
drink, walk, stand and even talk when they reach a particular age. Cognitive development in
children is the ability of the child to talk at the right time. As a parent it is important to note if the
child has cognitive response (Meggitt, 2007).

is the ability of the child to interact with others and do things together with them, language is the
ability of the child to communicate using the mouth, understanding what others say as well as
using body language and understanding body language from others. The last is cognitive which
is the child’s ability to think critically, to solve problems as well as to reason and remembering
skills.
Cognitive and language work together. Language is the ability of the child in question to
communicate properly. This means that by the time the child was at nine months she could even
call out the mother or react using the body to signify that she has understood what has been
communicated. This is where cognitive comes in. cognitive is the ability of the child to
understand what has been communicated and to make the necessary communication. For
instance, if the two year old child is inflicted with pain, the language motor will make the child
scream because she has understood or comprehended that she is in danger (Meggitt, 2007).
Reasons of late milestone development
At two years, the child should be able to respond as required because both the cognitive
and languages motors are working simultaneously. In this respect, the child should be responding
just like the age mates do. However, there are various factors that would lead to slow
development in the child. As a parent, you child understand your child very well. For instance,
the child may be two years old but has been often sick it is only natural that the child may not
accomplish all the milestones and might stagnate.
Secondly, the child could be suffering from other conditions as well. it is very necessary
for the parent to be very observant around the child. This could help the parent realize any other
condition that the child is facing that would make her not talk by aid two. It could be that the

child has low reception because the brain function may be improper. Therefore, if you notice the
child doing abnormal things, the parent would obviously know where the problem is arising
from.
Thirdly, the child herself could be so slow in development herself. She could be very
slow in growth but it does not mean that she will never speak. As a parent, she should compare
how the child achieved her development milestones, and if she realizes that she was slower than
the other children her age, she should give her more time and finally, she will speak just as the
rest.
For a child to speak, she must have seen others speaking. This means, that the parent
should always talk with the child if she wants the child to speak. Lastly, it could also be the fault
of the parent because they did not engage the child actively to speak. When you speak the child
wants to touch your lips because they perceive movement and will want to do the same with
themselves. However, if the child has been always alone, the child will not speak quite easily
themselves.

The best way to go about this is to train the child to speak as you give the child sometime to
catch up with her mates in case she achieved her milestones slowly. The other way to go about

condition that makes her unable to do what she is supposed to do.
The doctors will be able to correct the problem and make her move faster should she be having a
medical related condition and eventually she will be able to take. This means that the parent
should go an extra mile in finding out the solution to the problem unless if the baby was born
dump.
