Comparison and Contrast Essay Assignment
The comparison and contrast essay will discuss two subjects that have something in
common and analyze their similarities, differences, or both. The comparison and contrast
paper needs to make a point, or thesis. You cannot simply list the similarities or
differences. There must be some deeper purpose behind the comparison, which is stated
in your thesis. Make sure your thesis can answer the “so what?”
Example thesis statements:
• Although both John and Sam grew up in the same culture, one appreciates his
culture while the other tries to run away from it.
• Although different in purpose, weddings and funerals each draw families together
and confirm family values.
• Although both Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King are master horror novelists,
Poe’s stories are scarier than King’s.
• Although audiences today prefer the numerous Saw movies, old movies by Alfred
Hitchcock are actually scarier.
Organizing Your Essay:
Comparison and contrast essays generally use one of the following methods of
organization: point by point or subject by subject. In subject by subject, one subject is
described in its entirety before the next subject is described. In subject-by-subject, you
would discuss all of subject A, and then move on to subject B. In point-by-point, you
alternate points about subject A with comparable points about subject B.
General Requirements:
• 3-4 pages (this means a minimum of 3 full pages, not 2.5)
• double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins
• Paper needs an original title and proper headings
• Paper must follow the MLA format for papers
• Avoid 1st & 2nd person (that means no: I, me, in my opinion, I think, you, etc.)
No outside sources are allowed. This means you should NOT pick a topic that
requires research or sources for support.
